Great Britain Basketball Team return to the O2 Arena on August 14 – 16 2009, as they take part in a 4 nation tournament with Israel, Turkey and Slovenia, in event entitled ‘Game On’ at The O2. Hedo Turkoglu and Marcin Gortat both turned out for Orlando Magic in this year’s NBA finals but will go head-to-head at Game On At The O2.
Turkoglu has just moved to the Toronto Raptors, which is where Britain’s Pops Mensah-Bonsu ended his season. But it’s not just about the glamour of the NBA stars, with the European Championships on the horizon Britain, Israel, Poland and Turkey will all be playing with national pride as each seeks to become the first champion of Game On At The O2. Tournament Format: Four teams, three days, two games per day, with one final winning team.
GB Basketball, growing steadily in strength and profile, will host its first ever international tournament at The O2 in August as part of the build-up to September’s European Championships in Poland.
GB will host Slovenia, who are in the same pool in Poland, Israel, who they narrowly defeated in qualifying last year, and Turkey, who are always one or the strongest teams in Europe and considered a good outside bet for the Championships.
The O2 proved an outstanding venue for GB’s qualifying game against the Czech Republic last September and the team are keen to lay down roots there over the next three years and “grow” a home crowd before it hosts all their games – and indeed all the showpiece games – for the 2012 Olympics.
